Summer Storms

For whatever reason, we don't seem to get thunder and lightening here in Victoria, not ever. I've heard explanations involving the mountain ranges and our location but couldn't find any information when I Googled it. When I lived in Pittsburgh we would get the most incredibly intense summer storms and I loved them. These heat storms would roar with thunder and the sky would suddenly open up all at once, and rain would fall so hard that just a second outside of cover would drench you to your underclothes. And then, just as quickly as they would start, it would all be over, and we would ride our bikes around the neighborhood assessing the damage. It was common to find trees or large branches on top of cars or blocking roadways. One year a tree fell on our neighbors newly laid roof.

On Friday morning I woke up to the sound of thunder, it was so uncharacteristic of  this area that I dismissed it at first. That night Elsie and I watched a storm move across the sky from my office window. There was such a distinction between the clear sky and the area that had clouded over from the storm. It moved quite quickly and was really neat to watch.

Do you love summer storms?

  1. Yes! I love summer storms :)

As a funny aside I woke up yesterday morning to a thunder storm and in my groggy half awake/half asleep state I honestly thought it was all my kiddos pounding their feet on the wall. I almost got up to tell them to stop when I realized it was just thunder :P

  2. Oh! I love to start the day with a good thunder storm here in Maine but I think one of the most impressive I've seen moved south to north over the Salt Lake Valley of Utah. Great pictures!

  5. We get wonder storms here in Nebraska (though unfortunately sometimes there's tornados along with them). We also get thunder in the winter during snow storms, it's not very often but really cool when it does happen.

    1. Wow! Your storms sound amazing! I've never heard of lightning during a snow storm, it must be so cool when it happens!

  6. I grew up in Virginia where every afternoon in the summer there seemed to be a "thunder bumper". My mom was terribly afraid of the very bad ones and sometimes would take us into the basement. She instilled that fear in one of my sisters who now lives in the San Francisco area where they don't have thunderstorms. A few years ago she was visiting me in the summer and we were in NJ at the beach (notice how I don't say Jersey Shore). We had an amazing thunderstorm which we watched from the porch - well, her kids who had never seen one watched with me and my kids while my sister stayed inside. I gently told her not to pass her fear onto her kids as thunderstorms can be so lovely to watch...of course, they need respect as well.

    1. You are so right. It's amazing how much our children rely on our queues to form their reactions to new things... I'm learning this more each day.

  7. I LOVE summer storms. I grew up in the desert, where the storms are unlike anywhere else in the world and now I live in the Midwest, where you kinda have to like storms and also be afraid of them. Unfortunately, we haven't had hardly any this summer. :( I miss them. I'm glad someone's getting them if we aren't, though!

  8. We've had thunderstorms and drenching rains pretty much every day for the last three weeks and I am in absolute heaven. Might be my second favorite type of weather, after pea soup fog.

  9. I love summer storms so very much. I would be quite sad if I never got to experience at least one per summer! That said, I was mightily annoyed when I discovered that, even in driving rain, it's difficult for me to hear it hitting the rooftop in my home.
That should most definitely be on the home-buyer's guide: rating scale of how well you can hear a rain storm!
