Spate Fingerless Mitts -- JOURNEY

Spate by Jane Richmond from JOURNEY || Now Available for Pre-Order!
{ spate }

. . .

When playing around with stitch patterns I often fall in love with them - and then use them again and again in multiple designs. I think it's because I'm very picky, both in the look of the stitch pattern as well as the enjoyment I get from knitting it. So when I find one I like I tend to want to use it for everything!

For example the Begbie Cowl, Begbie Toque, and the Hart shrug all use the same open work rib:

And my design Spate from the book uses a similar stitch pattern to the Wellington hat and the Beacon Hill cardi:

Last week Shannon shared her gorgeous projects from our new book JOURNEY over on her blog: Antrorse on Tuesday, Onward on Wednesday, and Swift on Thursday. They are all amazing pieces so if you'd like a little more insight into these designs you have to check out her posts and all the pretty pics.

This week it's my turn to introduce you to the other half of the patterns, my designs, first up is Spate.

Spate uses an elongated honeycomb stitch that I've fallen in love with. What makes it so unique is that although it looks like a cable stitch it's made by working 2 stitches at once and subsequently reversing their order - sounds complicated but it's really easy to do and results in a finished product that looks far more complicated than it actually is!

I designed these fingerless mitts with a thumb opening rather than a gusset to eliminate bulk, I believe its more flattering as well. Extra length is knit to cover the hand so that the ribbed cuff at the fingers can be worn flipped up for added warmth or folded over.

These mitts are deceivingly quick and easy which make them a perfect gift knit! Such an easy way to impress the recipient - it will look like you've slaved away at this project ;)

  1. I want to make them in this exact colour! And I love that you stick to a stitch pattern when you find one that works for you. It creates beautiful pieces that look good together. :)

  2. Thanks Cate! I actually discovered Sincere Sheep and this colourway at VK Live last year and knew I needed to work with it, it's such a classic neutral colour.
